Fitness game developer Quell receives $10 million investment from Tencent and others

UK-based fitness game developer and publisher Quell has recently received new investment in a Series A funding round.

The funding round, led by multinational tech company Tencent, saw Quell receive approximately €9.28 million (US $10 million). Joining Tencent to provide follow-on investment was Khosla Ventures, Heartcore Capital, Social Impact Capital and Naval Ravikant. To date, Quell has received around €14.47 million ($15.6 million) in funding.

In a press statement, the fitness game developer revealed that the funding will mainly be put towards the development of its launch game Shardfall, as well as funding the expansion of Quell’s portfolio of titles. Furthermore, investment will be pledged towards scaling up production of the “Impact” fitness gaming system, developed by Quell, and using motion tracking technology to create an “immersive video gaming experience.”

Quell also produces wearable devices such as resistance bands which are apparently athlete-grade and available in various levels of strength. These bands mean that players do not need to use virtual reality or camera devices, as they “turn the player’s body into the controller,” as put by the company.

“The Quell Impact is the first gaming platform designed from the ground up to deliver high-intensity, personalised workouts where the player is the controller,” remarked Cameron Brookhouse, Co-Founder and CEO of Quell.

“Through our pioneering technology, we aim to help millions of people worldwide unlock the health and wellness benefits of exercising while immersing them in worlds where the hero gets stronger as they do.”

Quell’s Impact gaming system reportedly has over 10,000 pre-orders.
