DDR Speisegaststätte PILA, a blast from the past

The PILA restaurant, with its small GDR museum, is located on Prenzlauer Allee 26, in the center of Prenzlauer Berg, former East Berlin. With 50 seats indoors and another 50 on the terrace, PILA serves traditional dishes from the former GDR, including Slojanka soup, Schnitzel “GDR style”, curry chicken, Berlin curry sausage, steaks and even the GDR’s own Burger, “Grilletta”. The restaurant is also filled with memorabilia and the waiters/waitresses are dressed in traditional uniforms from the GDR youth organisation. Inside is divided into a rustic seating area and small lounge with comfortable armchairs, where diners can sit back and relax. Try the delicious steak and schnitzel variations or the “pioneer camp menu”, with 3 different 3-course menus including Fassbrause or Berliner Pilsner. Please note the restaurant only takes cash.

Permanent representation gastronomy GmbH

Located on the banks of the river Spree in Berlin‘s Mitte district on Schiffbauerdamm, Ständige Vertretung (StäV) which translates as Permanent Representation, is the perfect place to unwind after a day at IFA 2022. Decorated with poster-sized snapshots of well-known German politicians, the restaurant’s name alludes to the permanent representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the GDR from 1974 until German reunification in 1990. It serves delicious German-Rhineland cuisine and classic Kölsch beer in a cozy and relaxed setting. This iconic venue once hosted political figures, and served as a junction for business, society and cultural for Berliners, Rhinelanders and people from all over the world.

ORA, enjoy drinks in a 19th century pharmacy

Located on Oranienplatz in the trendy district of SO36 in Kreuzberg, ORA serves a selection of tasty cocktails and dishes in a historical setting. The bar took over an old pharmacy dating back to 1861 and turned it into a trendy drinking spot, where diners can raise their glass surrounded by what was once wooden medicine cabinets and apothecary jars. The beautiful space still features the detailed woodwork and ceiling cornices from 1860 and the 1920s. The kitchen menu change regularly and is inspired by whatever produce arrives that very morning. ORA, which stands for Oranien Apotheke (Oranien Pharmacy), also offers light bites, snacks and small plates to share or enjoy solo with a glass of wine or two over the course of an evening.

Café im Literaturhaus, a stunning house in a beautiful garden

The café, in one of the most stunning gardens in the city, has a small and creative menu, serving dishes made with fresh ingredients which change on a monthly basis. Diners can choose to enjoy their drinks and food in the bright conservatory, tall, stucco-decorated rooms, in the green garden or on the small outdoor terrace. A list of delicious wines and homemade ginger lemonade, or punch during the winter, are also coffee house classics. Housed in one of the most beautiful villas on Fasanenstrasse, the café benefits from a wonderfully quiet location next to the bookstore Kohlhaas & Co and the Literaturhaus Berlin, which have together been hosting popular events and exhibitions since it opened in 1986.
